Applying Lindy Effect on reading

Nowadays, Lindy Effect has been all over social media and Twitter. I first came across this term while reading Antifragile that essentially means the more exposure you received in the past, the more exposure you’ll receive in the future.

Of couse, this idea is relevant to things that are non-perishable such as ideas, technologies, music, gold, books, etc.

I spend an inordinate amount of sum on books in addition to borrowing at least 5-10 books from the SFPL.

Until last year, I used to be in the race to complete the most number of books and participate in challenges on Goodreads and inadvertently turned that joy into a status game. This year I will be focusing on reading with intent. I plan to read not just for the sake of reading and learning a few things but spend a considerable amount of time on each book I pick and absorb the most information I can.

With that, I will have to be extremely considerate in the books I choose and hence I intend to apply the Lindy Effect and read more classics and fundamental knowledge books instead of the ones with the catchy title.

This year, I started:

  • giving up on my natural tendency to keep books in pristine condition
  • making a ton of notes and highlights for parts that interest me the most
  • giving up on my urge to finish each book I start
  • write a few key bullets and learnings on this blog so I can refer them from anywhere at a later time
  • doing more due diligence on the books I read
  • focusing more on enjoying my time reading and learning 🙂

Life is good!
